老猫

An old woman had a cat. The cat was very old; she could not run quickly, and she could not bite, because she was so old. One day the old cat saw a mouse; she jumped and caught the mouse. But she could not bite it; so the mouse got out of her mouth and ran away, because the cat could not bite it.

Then the old woman became very angry because the cat had not killed the mouse. She began to hit the cat. The cat said, "Do not hit your old servant. I have worked for you for many years, and I would work for you still, but I am too old. Do not be unkind to the old, but remember what good work the old did when they were young."

Clever Blackie 聪明的黑子

Tom was very proud of his dog Blackie. Whenever he got the chance, hewould ask his dog to please his friends with some tricks.

One day Tom went to visit his friend Jack who was sick at home with a bad cold."How are youfeeling?" asked Tom."Worse than yesterday," answered Jack, "I have a terriblecough, and there is not a drop of medicine in the house. "Dont worry, Jack. Ill send Blackie to the drugstore for some medicine. Hell be back in a minute before you know it." Tom put a five dollar note in Blackies mouth and the dog ran down the street. "And keep the change," Tom shouted after him.

"Oh, Tom, dont be silly. You know that dog wont be back with any medicine," saidJack. "oh, yes he will." answered Tom. Half an hour later, however, Blackie had notreturned. Tom was feeling worried and felt angry at his friends little smile.

"Something has happened to him, Im sure," said Tom. "He obeyed me as a rule." Just then Jack saw Blackie at a distance. He hurried to open the door and let him in. Jack was shocked to see a bottle of medicine in the dogs mouth.

"Good boy," said Tom, "But what took you so long?" Blackie ran to the window, barkingand wagging his tail. Tom looked out of the door and saw a bone outside.

苹果

A man was going to the house of some rich person. As he went along the road, he saw a box of good apples at the side of the road. He said, "I do not want to eat those apples; for the rich man will give me much food; he will give me very nice food to eat." Then he 　　took the apples and threw them away into the dust.

He went on and came to a river. The river had become very big; so he could not go over it. He waited for some time; then he said, "I cannot go to the rich mans house today, for I cannot get over the river."

He began to go home. He had eaten no food that day. He began to want food. He came to the apples, and he was glad to take them out of the dust and eat them.

Do not throw good things away; you may be glad to have them at some other time.

The father told one of the boys to go quickly to the spring and fetch christening water; the other six ran along with him, and because each of them wanted to be the first to dip the jug into the well, it fell in and sank. So there they stood and didnt know what to do, and none of them dared go home. When they didnt come back their father got impatient and said:“ Ill wager theyve been playing some game again and forgotten all about it, the godless brats.“ He was afraid the little girl would have to die unbaptized, and in his rage he cried out:“ I wish those boys would all turn into ravens.“ Hed scarcely spoken the words when he heard a whirring of wings in the air overhead, looked up and saw seven coal-black ravens flying away.
