Honorable judges, ladies and gentlemen, good morning!

Today, my topic is "Changing Ourselves".

At first, I'd like to tell you a little story about an insurance salesman in Tokyo. Even though this man tried very hard to promote the insurance, nobody bought it. One day, he came to a small temple and began to brag about his insurance. After listening to his introduction, the monk said: "Your recommendation of insurance can't arouse any of my interests! When you are communicating with others, you must have the charm to attract others, or you will be unpromising in the future. Young man, try to change yourself!"

The salesman thought deeply about each word. From then on, he invited all his friends to point out his weakness and kept on improving himself bit by bit for all his life. Thirty years later, he became a millionaire. And this man is the famous salesperson in the world: Yuan Yi Ping. His experience reflects one attitude: sometimes, we should change ourselves instead of changing the world.

Human beings always scan others, therefore, lots of people just see the flaws of them, then they will blame and criticize the outside factors, some people will even try to change them! Unfortunately, they ignore the importance of the inner factors.

Everybody in the world needs to examine himself critically, everybody has to learn to be tolerant and generous. You won't think the world is splendid unless you change your attitude first.

Dear friends, we'd better remodel ourselves rather than blame each other. If we do so, we'll find that yesterday's sorrow is today's gratification, yesterday's opponent is today's assistant, and yesterday's failure is today's success! Remember: if we can change ourselves, we can change the whole world!

The rough times are gonna come, but they have not come to stay, they have come to pass. Greatness, is not this wonderful, esoteric, illusive, God like feature that only the special among can achieve. It’s necessary, that you get the losers out of your life, if you want to live your dream. But people who are running towards their dreams, life has a special kind of meaning. When you become the ‘right-person’, what you do is you start separating yourself from other people you begin to have a certain uniqueness, as long as you follow other people, as long as you are being a ‘copy-cat’, you will never ever be the best copy-cat in the wo-rld but you will be the best you can be!

in my 18 years of life, there have been many things. university days are the best part of them. i can never forget the days when i stepped into my university. i was impressed by its garden-like campus, its enthusiastic students and especially its learning atmosphere. i at once fell in love with it.

after the arduous military training, i get absolutely absorbed in my studies. the classes given by the teachers are excellent. they provide us with information not only from our textbooks but from many other sources as well. they easily arouse my insatiable desire to take in as much as i can.

frankly speaking, at first i had some difficulty following the teachers. however, through my own efforts and thanks to my teachers’ guidance, i made remarkable progress. now i’ve benefited a lot from lectures and many other academic reports.

learning is a long process; i’ll keep exploring in the treasure house of knowledge to enrich myself. this summer i got out of the ivory tower and entered the real world. a publishing house offered me a part-time job in compilation and revision.

at the beginning i was belittled by my colleagues. but they were really surprised when i translated seven english articles over 5,000 words on only one day. gradually, they began to look at me with respectful eyes. in their opinion i turned out to be a useful and trustworthy colleague.

i also realize that only those who bring happiness for others can be truly happy. so i often take part in activities concerning public welfare. i once went to a barren mountain village with my classmates. we taught the kids there who could not afford school. while showing them how broad and how civilized the outer world is, i was deeply touched by their eagerness to learn, their honesty and their purity. i couldn’t control my tears on the day when we left. the precious experience with the poor kids made me aware of the responsibility on the shoulders of us, future teachers.

besides study and social practice, there are entertainments as well. i do body building every day, hoping to keep healthy and energetic. we also write a play and put it on in our spare time.

campus life is the most splendid time. but different people have different choices. the majority of students cherish their beautiful season and cherish the hope that one day they’ll become outstanding. but there are indeed some students still under ignorance. they gather together for eating, drinking or playing cards. they’re busy in searching for a girlfriend or a boyfriend. they forget completely about their mission as college students and the hope of their motherland.

finally, i do hope everybody can try their best to become a worthy citizen of the country. i do hope everybody can become the backbone of our nation and make great contributions to society!

but one hundred years later, we must face the tragic fact that the negro isstill not free. one hundred years later, the life of the negro is still sadlycrippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. onehundred years later, the negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midstof a vast ocean of material prosperity. one hundred years later, the negro isstill languishing in the corners of american society and finds himself an exilein his own land. so we have come here today to dramatize an appallingcondition.

in a sense we have come to our nation's capital to cash a check. when thearchitects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the constitution andthe declaration of independence, they were signing a promissory note to whichevery american was to fall heir. this note was a promise that all men would beguaranteed the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit ofhappiness.

it is obvious today that america has defaulted on this)( promissory noteinsofar as her citizens of color are concerned. instead of honoring this sacredobligation, america has given the negro people a bad check which has come backmarked "insufficient funds." but we refuse to believe that the bank of justiceis bankrupt. we refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the greatvaults of opportunity of this nation.

so we have come to cash this check -- a check that will give us upon demandthe riches of freedom and the security of justice.

we have also come to this hallowed spot to remind america of the fierceurgency of now. this is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or totake the tranquilizing drug of gradualism. now is the time to rise from the darkand desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. now isthe time to open the doors of opportunity to all of god's children. now is thetime to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solidrock of brotherhood.

it would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment andto underestimate the determination of the negro. this sweltering summer of thenegro's legitimate discontent will not pauntil there is an invigorating autumnof freedom and equality. nineteen sixty-three is not an end, but abeginning.

those who hope that the negro needed to blow off steam and will now becontent will have a rude awakening if the nation returns to busineas will be neither rest nor tranquility in america until the negro is grantedhis citizenship rights. the whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake thefoundations of our nation until the bright day of justice emerges.

but there is something that i must say to my people who stand on the warmthreshold which leads into the palace of justice. in the proceof gaining ourrightful place we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. let us not seek tosatisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterneandhatred.

we must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity anddiscipline. we must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physicalviolence. again and again we must rise to the majestic heights of meetingphysical force with soul force.

the marvelous new militancy which has engulfed the negro community must notlead us to distrust of all white people, for many of our white brothers, asevidenced by their presence here today, have come to realize that their destinyis tied up with our destiny and their freedom is inextricably bound to ourfreedom.

we cannot walk as we walk, we must make the pledge that we shallmarch ahead. we cannot turn back. there are those who are asking the devotees ofcivil rights, "when will you be satisfied?" we can never be satisfied as long asour bodies, heavy with the fatigue of travel, cannot gain lodging in the motelsof the highways and the hotels of the cities. we cannot be satisfied as long asthe negro's basic mobility is from a smaller ghetto to a larger one. we cannever be satisfied as long as a negro in mississippi cannot vote and a negro innew york believes he has nothing for which to vote. no, no, we are notsatisfied, and we will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters andrighteousnelike a mighty stream

i am not unmindful that some of you have come here out of great trials andtribulations. some of you have come fresh from narrow cells. some of you havecome from areas where your quest for freedom left you battered by the storms ofpersecution and staggered by the winds of police brutality. you have been theveterans of creative suffering. continue to work with the faith that unearnedsuffering is redemptive.

go back to mississippi, go back to alabama, go back to georgia, go back tolouisiana, go back to the slums and ghettos of our northern cities, knowing thatsomehow this situation can and will be changed. let us not wallow in the valleyof despair.

i say to you today, my friends, that in spite of the difficulties andfrustrations of the moment, i still have a dream. it is a dream deeply rooted inthe american dream.

i have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the truemeaning of its creed: "we hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men arecreated equal."

i have a dream that one day on the red hills of georgia the sons of formerslaves and the sons of former slaveowners will be able to sit down together at atable of brotherhood.

i have a dream that one day even the state of mississippi, a desert state,sweltering with the heat of injustice and oppression, will be transformed intoan oasis of freedom and justice.
